NOTE: 3:1-2 - Both leaders and people need the above 2-fold prayer. Today, October 23, 2009, we need this prayer for our nation. We have had leaders appointed - czars - not responsible to people or government, who are seeking to remove our freedoms. How different from George Washington and Abraham Lincoln! We indeed pray for our leaders, as we are exhorted in Scriptures; and God hears. But He Himself permits such a chain of events - so that we - His people - may come alive! We have been asleep. Or like the frog in heating water, are unaware of our danger, until we have been boiled. God would spare us this, and present governments such as ours can awaken us and send us back to 2 Chronicles 7:14.

3:3-5 is the assurance in the heart of Paul that God will indeed answer the above two requests.

3:6-16 - These 2 special letters to the church of the Thessalonians are extremely practical. Paul points to himself and his team as an example to them. Laziness and being busybodies was no partof their life-style. And professing believers need to consider their example, and walk in it. These 2 letters major on the Return of our Lord. This section is a practical word in the light of this emphasis. Lewi Pethrus of Stockholm, Sweden in his great Filadelfia church, practiced the truth of this section. In a congregation of some 6000 composed even of members of the royal family and government, often 50-100 members would be seated on a raised platform at the back of the sanctuary, until they had paid the penalty for infractions such as the above. “Christian Church Discipline” was the title of a book written by Pastor Pethrus, outlining the reason for and methods of - ministering this subject. It brought the presence of the Lord, and made this church one of Smith Wigglesworth's favorite in ministering to. God is pleased when we obey His word in disciplining either our children, or church members. On one occasion one of our children said, “Dad, I know why you spank us when we need it - it's so we don't turn out to be brats like kids whose parents won't spank them!” Well said, Dr. Spock not withstanding!

3:17-18 - Isn't it sad that Paul had to personally sign letters his secretaries recorded, because of dishonest writers who sought to get their writings read by appending Paul's name to them! Dishonesty is still prevalent in our day, 2000 years later! As a matter of fact, God's word records that just prior to Christ's return, world standards will be at their lowest ebb! How many can testify to the truth of God's prophetic word in this regard? - J.A.W.
